Herewith these notes are presented by yours truly, The Secretary.

Ea Tolkien Society of Spokane

March 2017 Notes

Attended: Chris, Corey, Richard, Hawke, Brian, Stephanie and Wesley

1. Welcomed new visitors Chris, Wesley, and Stephanie

2. We went around and shared how each of us got interested in J.R.R. Tolkien's stories.

3. Hawke went over overview of various Tolkien-related projects.

4. Wesley commented on the Inklings Writer's Group in Spokane, which he is part of.

5. Brian read the February Notes.

6. Hawke reprised the plot of the 2016 Tolkien Moot, "The Undead", and explained why we read the economics essay by

Michael Martinez last month... tie in to role-playing more realistically with actual coins (see d20 version of The One Ring: http://cubicle7.co.uk/dd-comes-to-middle-earth/)

7. Wes read Letter 133 of Tolkien.

*The poem Errantry is mentioned... Brian read part of it.

*The wikipedia article on the poem mentions that its unique meter allows it to be sung to Gilbert & Sullivan's tune "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General".

*Publishing of the Lord of the Rings was now back on track, as JRRT corresponded with Rayner Unwin.

8. Hawke read Letter 134.
*Corey asked when did Leaf by Niggle get published. (January 1945)
*Tolkien's tape-recordings... are they really as good as he thought they were? Yes and no. The author reading his own work is very valuable. However, his style of reading aloud seems dry to some.

9. Richard read Letter 135.
*Chris commented--Tolkien never liked technology/modern machinery.
*Stephanie commented on writers writing letters to the publisher.

10. Hawke's announcements--Tolkien Reading Day is on March 25. Also Mythmoot is June 1-4  https://www.facebook.com/mythmoot/

11. Wes promoted Corey Olson podcast on Tolkien: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-tolkien-professor/id320513707?mt=2

12. Chris read Letter 136.
* This discusses how the six books of the LOTR ended up in 3 volumes, and what their titles were.

13. The next Tolkien Society meets April 15, 2017, from 1-3 pm at Hawke's home.

Respectfully submitted by smial secretary, Brian Huseland.
